The 2018 Peach Blossom Spring Cup National Weiqi Competition kicked off in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province on April 29. Weiqi, known in English as Go, is a game played with black and white small stones on a board of 361 crosses.

The competition was composed of six events, including a mass competition, an amateur competition, an entrepreneur competition, a veteran cadre competition, a grade-5 competition and a professional competition.
The major purpose of the mass competition is to verify the ranking of teenagers from grades 1 to 5; the grade-5 competition brings together the outstanding juvenile players in Yangzhou.
A total of 1,500 players around the country took part in the competition, including 85 entrepreneurs.

Ren Jie, chairman of the Yangzhou Chess Association, said that the competition set a number of records in the history of Yangzhou Weiqi, having the most numerous participants, the largest number of domestic and overseas professional participants, and the most valuable competition prize.
“Peach Blossom Spring” is an allusion in the history of Yangzhou Weiqi, referring to an ancient well in Yangzhou, a symbol of Weiqi’s thriving in Yangzhou in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
