A national Chinese painting exhibition co-hosted by the China Artists Association and Gaoyou municipal government is on display at the local museum from April 28 to May 18.

Being the largest art exhibition Gaoyou has ever held, the exhibition aims to showcase the rich local postal culture and preserve the history of the Grand Canal.

Gaoyou, a county-level city in Yangzhou, is a vivid reflection of China's ancient postal culture. It is the only city in China that still contains "邮" (the Chinese character for post) in its name and is in well preservation of a large ancient postal stop which can be dated back to the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).

The exhibition has attracted great attention since it started collecting artistic works from the public last September. A total of 4,280 pieces of paintings were submitted to the organizers and 204 of them were selected to be displayed at the exhibition, including eight pieces from Gaoyou.

Covering genres like mountain-and-water, bird-and-flower, and figures, the paintings depict the landscapes of Gaoyou and the rich natural and cultural heritages alongside the Grand Canal.

Innovative works themed on environmental protection, science rejuvenation, and ethnic minority cultures are another highlight of the exhibition.

She Yuqi, deputy head of the Jiangsu Artists Association, highly praised the positive momentum of the art industry in Gaoyou. She also suggested building a national sketching base in Gaoyou to attract more artists and make its name heard at broader stages.

According to insiders, Gaoyou has reached an agreement with the China Artists Association to host five more national Chinese painting exhibitions in the future, and seeks to make the exhibition a cultural and artistic brand with typical Gaoyou characteristics.
