A painting and calligraphy activity was launched in Yangzhou on Aug 18, bringing together over 20 calligraphers and painters nationwide to improvise artworks and showcase the beauty of the 10th Jiangsu Horticulture Expo Park.
Ding Xuehai, deputy mayor of Yizheng, a county-level city in Yangzhou, said that the activity is to mark the upcoming grand opening of the 10th Jiangsu Horticulture Expo on Sept 28.
The layout of the expo park has been set out to be a miniature version of Jiangsu. For example, rivers and lakes in the park represent main water areas such as the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake and 13 exhibition gardens of 13 cities in Jiangsu are set according to their geographic locations.
"It's quite remarkable that Yangzhou could build a park combining Chinese classic culture and modern civilization in such a short period of time," said Yin Shi, deputy director of the Nanjing Calligraphy Association.
Li Yuming, a graduate student majoring in Chinese painting at Yangzhou University, said the visit gave him a unique experience which was quite different from his previous sketching activities.
"We usually go to places with beautiful natural scenery, such as Huangshan Mountain in Anhui province. These places sometimes are very similar," Li said, who has a preference for historical landscapes and believes only these kinds of landscapes can reveal the true features of local culture.
He said that the visit was very meaningful for he could experience different regional cultures while enjoying a stroll around the park.
