A new historical play called Jianzhen, created by the research institute of Yangzhou opera, was staged at Yangzhou Grand Theater, East China’s Jiangsu province, for the first time on March 26.
The play tells the story of Jianzhen and his disciples' voyage to Japan to propagate Buddhism during the Tang Dynasty (618-903) in the form of Yangzhou opera. The story has been interpreted into various literary and artistic forms to date, including biography, guzheng (Chinese zither) concerto, symphony and a musical. [Photo/yznews.cn]
The play is directed by Han Jianying, a renowned theater director in China, and the script is written by Xie Boliang, professor of the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts.
