Gaoyou, a county-level city in Yangzhou, East China's Jiangsu province were included in a provincial program for its efforts to integrate culture with tourism, according to an announcement by the provincial Department of Culture and Tourism on Nov 16.
Sixteen places in the province made the list.
The provincial recognition is a result of Gaoyou's efforts to develop the culture and tourism industries in recent years.
For example, Yucheng Postal Stop, a world heritage listed in 2014, was the largest ancient post station along the Grand Canal during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (AD 1368-1911). Also, it is regarded as the best preserved ancient post station in China.
In addition, the Zhuhu town is best known for its aquatic dawn redwood forest that becomes a stunning sea of red in autumn. Taking a boat through the aquatic forest is the most popular activity among visitors.
Gaoyou is currently home to three world cultural heritages, six major historical and cultural sites under national level protection and 11 such sites under provincial level protection.
The tourism revenue of Gaoyao in 2022 was valued at 17 billion yuan ($2.51 billion), which has played a significant role in its common prosperity drive.
