Meng Xiaohong, an inheritor of Yangzhou dough figurines, has made a series of rabbit-themed dough figurines to celebrate the Chinese New Year as the rabbit is the zodiac animal for this year.
Dough figurines, also known as "glutinous rice figurines", are a traditional Chinese art form which uses wheat flour and glutinous rice flour as the main ingredients. They are popular all over China and are universally loved.
Among the various art styles of dough figurines all over the country, Yangzhou dough figurines are particularly unique as they are imbued with the rich history and customs of the canal city in East China's Jiangsu province.
The delicate and lovely dough figurine handicrafts reflect the historic traditions and contemporary styles of Yangzhou. In 2008, dough figurines were included in the city's intangible cultural heritage item list, which has increased attention on the local folk art.
