Revitalizing heritage: the transformation of Pishi Street in Yangzhou

(seeyangzhou.com)Updated: 2024-08-07

Nestled along the serene banks of the ancient Grand Canal lies Pishi Street, a provincial-level tourist and leisure hub in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province. Stretching a total of 689 meters, this vibrant street used to be a bustling leather goods market, while in modern days, it has made an enormous difference.

Embracing the noble mission of "reviving the ancient Grand Canal", Yangzhou has embarked on a transformative journey to rejuvenate Pishi Street.

What once started with a modest dozen shops has blossomed into a diverse ecosystem, now hosting a rich tapestry of nearly a hundred local cultural and creative businesses, distinctive dining venues, cozy coffee shops, repositories of intangible cultural heritage, and themed homestays. The atmosphere exudes a youthful vibrancy, brimming with unique character and charm.

Since 2021, Pishi Street has been a hub of activity, hosting many engaging events such as coffee culture festivals, book night markets, Mid-Autumn Festival garden parties, Lantern Festival fairs, and more.

These signature events have enriched the cultural sense of the street and catalyzed a surge in consumer interest and spending, unlocking the latent economic potential of the area.
